CofC Women?s Tennis Snaps Samford?s Five-Game Win Streak

The Cougars (4-4, 1-0 SoCon) clinched the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) snapped a three-game losing streak to capture an 8-4 victory over Samford's Lindsey Mallory and Taylor Morgan. Senior Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Secondary) and sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Pope) also earned a big win, defeating 54th-ranked Madelie van Rensburg and Stephanie Parkison 8-4 to move to 2-0 as a pair.
Dowse and Hayman also picked up wins in singles action. Top-seeded Dowse won her first set against Morgan 7-5. After dropping the second set, 6-3, she rebounded to win the third set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4). Hayman also needed three sets to beat Bulldogs' Andrie Meiring. Hayman earned a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 decision to move to 4-4 on the season from the No. 2 spot.
Newman won her fourth singles match of the season from the third spot in straight sets, defeating van Rensburg 6-2, 7-5 for a second time on Saturday. Junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) earned Charleston's fourth victory in singles action with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win. Casey is now 4-1 from the No.4 spot in 2010.
The Bulldogs first defeat of the year on their home courts brings them to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon.
CofC finishes its weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match against the Lady Mocs of Chattanooga at the UTC Tennis Center. Fans can follow the action via Live Stats on Chattanooga's website.
