MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston (10-3, 4-0) maintained its unblemished record in the Southern Conference with a hard fought 4-3 victory over Elon (4-10, 3-1) in a league men's tennis match on Monday, March 22 at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
“We had some chances in the doubles at one and two, but came up short” said head coach Jay Bruner. “I am proud of the way the team responded today and there was a good battle on every court. The team worked together to fight and they found a way to win the match”.
In doubles competition, the Cougars claimed the No. 3 match as sophomore Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France) and junior Mickael Boyer (Meudon, France) posted an 8-2 victory over Eric Turner and Alex Crockford. It would be a pair of battles at the first and second positions though that allowed Elon to pull out the doubles point with two 8-6 victories.
The Phoenix continued their strong performance in singles play as Cody Stauffer-MacDowell gave them a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 spot. From there, CofC started to rally as junior Lukas Koncilia (Tyrol, Austria) posted a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 1 and Trintignac tied the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the second spot.
Sophomore Tom Delme (Hamoir, Belgium) continued the streak and gave the College of Charleston its first lead with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 3 position. Needing only one victory out of the two matches left in play, Mickael Boyer put the Cougars in position for the victory.
The native of Meudon, France trailed 3-2 in the deciding set before holding and breaking serve to take a 4-3 lead. Boyer and his opponent Eric Turner then each held serve to make it 5-4 before he put the set, and the match, away at 6-4. Elon reached the final margin of 4-3 with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 decision by Tommy Darling at the sixth position.
Having wrapped up their eight-match home stand with an impressive 7-1 record, the College of Charleston now hits the road for a pair of matches as they travel to Appalachian State for a 2 p.m. match on Friday, March 26 and a 1 p.m. contest at Davidson on Sunday, March 28.
