SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team garnered four All-Southern Conference selections as announced by the league office this week.
The Cougars were represented by Sean de Silva and Shawn Ferguson on the first team, Andy Craven on the second team and Troy Peterson on the all-freshman team.
"I'm very proud of each of these players for being honored by the conference coaches," said head coach Ralph Lundy. "Although these are individual accolades, the awards represent our program and all the hard work each player puts into it."
De Silva, a junior midfielder from Port of Spain, Trinidad, earns first-team honors for the second season in a row. He is a constant spark in the midfield who teams have to spend a lot of effort trying to contain. He led the league in shots with 65 in 2011 and netted four goals while assisting five.
Ferguson, a junior defender out of Rock Hill, S.C., was a pre-season all-conference selection and lived up to the expectations with a great year on the field in 2011. A rock at central back, Ferguson didn't sit out a single minute on the field this season and picked up five points on a goal and three assists.
Sophomore forward Craven followed up last season's Freshman of the Year performance with an inclusion on the second team despite missing the Cougars' final 10 matches due to injury. Craven started the season with six goals in CofC's first eight matches, a pace which places him in second in the league in goals per game. The St. Simon's Island, Ga., sophomore scored a pair of goals in both of CofC's banner wins over South Carolina and Denver.
Peterson made his presence known immediately as he exploded onto the scene as a freshman forward. He strung together a three-match goal-scoring streak in early October and ended the season with 13 points on six goals and an assist.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players or for themselves in the balloting.
The 2011 men's soccer season reaches its climax this weekend as UNCG, Furman, Appalachian State and Elon descend on Boone, N.C., for the semifinals and final of the 2011 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship. The semifinals will be held at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Friday with the championship match Sunday at 1 p.m. from the ASU Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
