ST. GEORGE, Utah - The College of Charleston men's golf team fired a 1-under 287 to finish in second-place out of 12 teams Tuesday at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational.
Freshman Alex Ellis led the Cougars as he earned a runner-up finish with a 5-under 139.
CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said he was pleased with the way his team performed.
"I think its a good start to the spring," he said. I'm happy with the way our young players stepped up and I'm looking forward to returning home and working on some of the areas we need to sharpen."
Ellis, who was one of only 11 players to shoot under-par for the tournament said he was happy with his effort for the Cougars first spring tournament.
"I'm proud of the way i played," Ellis said. "I finally put two good rounds together. Once the team puts four good scores together we will be in business."
Following Ellis was freshman Parker Allen, who tied for 12th with an even-par 144. In the final round Allen was very consistent as he totaled 16 pars and two birdies.
Allen, a native of Blythewood, S.C. said he enjoyed the experience in his first visit to the west coast.
"It was a good experience," he said. "It was different from anywhere i had every been and it was fun seeing a different part of the country."
Junior Seth Stuart was third for CofC and finished 15th overall with a 1-over 145. Stuart made six birdies, six pars and six bogeys in his final round to shoot even-par.
The Cougars resume play on Feb. 28 as they host the Charleston Shootout at The Links at Stono Ferry.
