MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team took down Cornell,6-1, in non-conference action at Patriots Point on Tuesday afternoon.
CofC (8-7) handed Cornell (7-4) only its fourth loss of the season as the Cougars swept the doubles point and won all but one match in straight sets.
"It was a good performance in our last non-conference match," said head coach Angelo Anastopoulo. "I feel certain that our challenging non-conference schedule has prepared us for the upcoming Southern Conference schedule.
"I was so happy and proud of Jamie Harrell picking up her first CofC singles victory. She has overcome more pain and setbacks - a shoulder injury - than any player to come through the program and worked really hard to earn that victory today."
No. 2 pairing Jamie Harrell (Charleston, S.C.) and Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished first with a dominant, 8-2 victory over Christine Ordway and Ryann Young. The No. 3 sister pairing of Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) finished moments later with a victory over Sinziana Chis and Ruxandra Dumitrescu by an identical set score. With the doubles point in hand, No. 1 pairing Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand) and Irene Viana (Paris, France) battled out an 8-5 victory over Kelly Comolli and Shannon Comolli to sweep the doubles round.
On the singles side, Dumitrescu earned the Big Red's only point when she took down Olivia McMillan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) by a score of 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot to even the match.
Caroline Newman put the Cougars back on top with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Chis at No. 3 to put the Cougars back in the lead.
No. 4 Viana defeated Kelly Comolli by a 6-4, 6-2 margin and No. 1 Christin Newman solidified the win for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ordway.
Harrell got past Sarah O'Neil in the No. 6 spot and Hayman fought out a 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 victory over Young at No. 2 to close out play.
The Cougars open Southern Conference play with a match against Elon on Wednesday, March 23 at Patriots Point at 1:30 p.m.
