MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team swept Elon, 7-0, in its Southern Conference opener on Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
With the win, CofC moves to 9-7 (1-0 SoCon) while Elon drops to 7-8 (3-3 SoCon).
"It's great to start out our SoCon schedule with a win against a young but very talented Elon team," said head coach Angelo Anastopoulo. "After enjoying the comforts of our eight-match home stretch we'll hit the road to play Davidson and Appalachian State which will be two more good challenges. Davidson always draws an enthusiastic crowd and it's always difficult to play in Boone [against Appalachian State] due to the high altitude.
"It was nice to have Kelly Kambourelis back for the match today and I want to give our trainer Jordan King a big thumbs up for having the most players available for us on this six-match stretch."
The Cougars swept doubles play for the second match in a row led by No. 3 Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) taking down Viviana Stavreva and Andrea Pont Grau in a spotless, 8-0 decision. The Cougars captured the doubles point when No. 2 pairing Katie Lee (Brisbane, Australia) and Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga.) took down Brynn Khoury and Frida Jansaker by an 8-5 count. The No. 1 doubles match was the closest but Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand) and Irene Viana (Paris, France) claimed that one for the Cougars as well, 8-7 over Jordan Johnston and Briana Berne.
No. 6 Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) shined in her return to play from injury in her convincing 6-0, 6-1 decision over Pont Grau.
No. 1 Christin Newman battled Jordan Johnston closely in the opening games but eventually ran away with the match to win 6-3, 6-1.
No. 3 Caroline Newman ensured the win for CofC with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jansaker.
Viana continued the Cougars' winning ways with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Berne in the No. 4 slot.
Casey picked up a win as well with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stavreva at No. 5.
No. 2 Hayman dropped her opening set but battled all the way back to defeat Khoury by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 count to complete the Cougars' clean sweep.
The Cougars continue SoCon play with a match at Davidson at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 26.
