ELON, N.C. - College of Charleston men's tennis had its 14-match conference win streak halted on Tuesday as the Cougars yielded a 5-2 decision to Elon.
The Phoenix (12-5, 4-0 SoCon) emerged from the match as the only team in the SoCon with its perfect conference record intact. The Cougars (9-5, 3-1 SoCon) drop to third in the conference along with Appalachian State, who they beat earlier in the season.
Elon swept the doubles matches and then increased its lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 2 singles. Senior Tom Delme (Hamoir, Belgium) put the CofC on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Eric Turner at the No. 3 spot. The win was Delme's sixth straight as he retained his flawless record against conference opponents (4-0).
Sophomore Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va.) also scored a point for the Cougars, winning a three-set match that ended in a 10-point tiebreak. After claiming the first set 6-4 and falling behind 7-5 in the second, Hardy rebounded with a 10-6 victory over Thomas Darling as the sixth seed. He is now 5-0 in singles this season.
Three other Cougars pushed their opponents to three sets before eventually falling to the Phoenix.
College of Charleston continues it's three-match road swing this weekend with stops at Chattanooga and Samford.
