Men?s Soccer Thwarted by ETSU in Exhibition Play

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell, 2-0, in an exhibition match at East Tennessee State University on Saturday evening. The teams were split evenly in shots and shots on goal, but the Cougars failed to capitalize on their chances in taking the loss.
“Tonight we faced a tough opponent in ETSU,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “I thought we had some really good spells of possession, particularly in the first half, but must be more consistent throughout the entire game.
“There was plenty to take away from the match and I think this match will help us focus on the things we need to improve on going into our regular season opener.”
Each team produced 11 shots and placed four on the target. The sides were also dead split in fouls, 12-12, with ETSU controlling a narrow edge in corner kicks, 6-5.
After a scoreless first period in which CofC outshot the Bucs, ETSU connected in the 51st minute when Theno Yang took a free kick from the left side of the field. Cougar goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) got a foot to the ball but wasn't able to completely deflect it as it found its way in to the net.
In the 69th minute, Dalton Guzman connected with Emmanuel Wilson, springing Wilson through the left side of the defense where he scored back to his right from 10 yards away.
Lundy played a lineup more closely resembling what will likely be used in the regular season, only bringing five players off the bench as opposed to 14 from the previous scrimmage against the University of Central Florida. Five different players went the full 90 minutes in Saturday's match.
The Cougars open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 24 against cross-state rival South Carolina in a rematch of the season opener last season which CofC claimed, 3-2, in front of record crowds at Patriots Point.
