Cougars Defeat Mercer, 4-1, In Sand Season Opener

CofC's Melissa Morello and Lizzie Theesfeld won the first flight (21-19, 21-13) over Mercer's Molly Locke and Jennifer Katona. Morello played well in her sand debut, totaling 12 kills and 14 digs with one block. Theesfeld, who had competed in the AVCA individual pairs championships last season, had 15 kills and four aces.
The Cougars won in the second flight as Darcy Dorton and Andi Zbojniewicz defeated Mercer's Codi Schepp and Zoe Becton in two sets (21-7, 21-16). Dorton totaled 14 kills, including nine in the second set, while Zbojniewicz had 22 total digs and two aces. Dorton also totaled two aces and a block.
Becton finished with 25 digs and 27 kills in the losing effort for the Bears.
The third flight featured a close two sets, but Kelly Kolich and Emily Neideffer outlasted Mercer's Jamie Duffy and Maddie Petsos (21-19, 21-16). Neideffer came up big with 39 digs and 19 kills in the two sets, while Kolich had seven kills and two blocks.
College of Charleston won the fifth flight handily as Emily Shelton and Catey Warren took a pair of 21-12 decisions of Mercer's Charlayna Braxton and Erin Brett. Shelton had 28 digs and 15 kills, while Warren finished with 14 kills and four aces.
The only set that Mercer won was the fourth flight, with the Bears' Emily Rochefort and Caroline Carlton taking a 22-20, 21-19 win over CofC's Sloane White and Taeler Davis. Davis had 17 digs and 19 kills, while White had eight kills and two aces. Rochefort led Mercer with 17 kills.
College of Charleston will face UAB tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. The tournament will continue through light rain, but not severe weather or lightning.
