Women?s Tennis Downs Defending Big South Champions, 5-2
2/10/2014 12:20:00 AM | Women's Tennis
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Despite having won 13 of the last 15 Big South conference championships, the Eagles of Winthrop University succumbed to the College of Charleston women's tennis team on Sunday, 5-2, at the Memorial Tennis Complex.
The Cougars (2-2) have also been dominant in recent years, having claimed five consecutive Southern Conference titles before moving to the Colonial Athletic Association this past summer. That class showed against the Eagles as the resilient Cougars – after losing the doubles point – fought through three, three-set matches too take five of six singles points.
“It was great match for us,” said director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “They kind of took it to us in doubles, but we competed well, showed our character and came out on top – against the top team in the Big South.”
The match was being played under the ITA's new experimental format where the traditional best-of-three-set format has made way to a third-set superbreaker to 10 points.
Searching for momentum after faulting in doubles, the Cougars found their spark when Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) fought back from a first set loss, to claim a second set win before clinching the point in thrilling fashion, 10-8 in the superbreaker.
Just moments later, both Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.), claimed dual, 6-4, 6-4 victories, downing Tijana Uzelac and Alice Garcia, respectively, to give the Cougars confidence as well as lead they would not relinquish.
The most exciting action of the day came on court one where Kelly Kambourelis – who like Schofield – found herself up 9-8 in the third set superbreaker. Returning serve, Kambourelis ripped a powerful forehand winner down the line to claim the set and the match for the Cougars.
Next up for the College is ACC power N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. at 12 p.m. (ET) at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
