ATLANTA – The College of Charleston sand volleyball split its two Saturday matches in the Sand in the City Tournament at Georgia State today.
The Cougars (5-1) defeated ULM for the second time in two weeks in the morning, but fell to host Georgia State in a windy finale to the day.
In the first match, Charleston won another 3-2 decision over Louisiana-Monroe. Melissa Morello and Cara Howley won handily in the second flight, 21-12 and 22-20. Kallie McKown and Grace Rebarchak also took an important sweep in the fifth flight (21-11, 21-9).
The match was won by third flight pair Andi Zbojniewicz and Sloane White who bounced back from a tough 19-21 defeat in the first set to win the second set, 21-14, and then secure the flight in the third, 15-12.
Georgia State proved to be too much for CofC up and down the lineup as the Cougars suffered their first loss of the season.
Howley and Morello fought hard in the third flight and took it to three sets by winning set one, 21-19, before falling 21-12 and 15-12.
The Cougar pairs will split up and compete in the pairs tournament tomorrow at Georgia State. Action will begin around 8 a.m., with the finals slated for 3 p.m.
