MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Battling through extreme winds, the College of Charleston men's tennis team blew past UNC Charlotte, 4-1, in convincing fashion on Sunday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Complex.
The Cougars (12-5), playing in their final home match of the season, were dominant on two of three courts in doubles play, led by the court three pairing of Charlie Ghriskey and Zack Lewis, who downed their 49er opposition, 8-1. On court two, the Chilean duo of Rodrigo Encinas and senior Crescente Lesser dispatched of Jack Williams and Paul Cisti, 8-5 to clinch the doubles point. Tied at 6-6, the court one matchup pitting Brice Allanic and Alon Faiman versus Forrest Edwards and Kamil Khalil went unfinished.
In singles play, the Cougars quickly took a 2-0 lead after recent CAA men's tennis Player of the Week, Zack Lewis, downed Williams 6-4, 6-2, on court four. The 49ers looked to claw their way back in to the match after Middle Tennessee State transfer Edwards defeated Allanic on court one, 6-3, 6-1. After Encinas claimed a court two victory over Kamil Khalil, 6-3, 6-3, junior Charlie Ghriskey clinched the match for the Cougars on court five in exciting fashion, defeating Alex Callot in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to give the Cougars their twelfth win of the season.
“Today was windy and we were up against a tough Charlotte team,” said CofC head coach Jay Bruner. “But I think we competed very well today and showed tons of teamwork. Our doubles was high-energy and we backed it up in singles. I'm proud of our seniors. Crescente (Lesser) and Stephen (Hardy) have led the program to consecutive undefeated home seasons and I'm very happy with what they have been able to accomplish.”
Next up for the Cougars is a Wednesday, April 2 road match with local rivals The Citadel, where doubles play is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
