Volleyball Inducts Six to Program?s Wall of Fame

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball head coach Jason Kepner inducted six former student-athletes to the program's Wall of Fame on Saturday night at the annual Alumni Banquet held in the McAlister Hospitality Suite on the third floor of TD Arena.
With current and former student-athletes, coaches and parents in attendance on a beautiful Lowcountry evening, Alisa Long (2000-03), Sara Davis (2001-04), Cole Dawley (2007-10), Sarah Havel (2008-11), Elyse Chubb (2008-11) and Darcy Dorton (2012-13) were all formally introduced in to the 25-person Wall of Fame that adorns the outer wall of the volleyball locker room.
“I am proud and honored to be a part of a program that has had so many great players throughout the years,” Kepner said. “CofC volleyball has such a great history; it is important for the current team to always remember all the hard work that went into building this program. This is our second class to be inducted onto our Wall of Fame and all six players deserve this honor. If you are a fan of the College of Charleston, you will remember cheering for all these players and know the impact they had during their years in Charleston.”
The Saturday night festivities added extra pomp to what was also a very good weekend for the Cougars on the court, coming from two sets down to beat Towson on Friday night before claiming a straight sets win over Delaware on Sunday.
Here is a quick look at the 2014 Wall of Fame class:
Alisa Long (2000-2003)…
Long played for the Cougars from 2000 to 2003, and helped usher in CofC's 13-year streak of conference titles. She was on Charleston's first SoCon regular season title team in 2001 and the school's first women's team to ever participate in the NCAA Tournament in 2002. She was an All-SoCon First Team honoree in 2003 and made the All-SoCon Second Team in 2002. She still ranks third all-time with 471 career blocks, averaging 1.01 per set and leading the Cougars in blocks in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Her 1,488 career kills (3.18/set) rank fourth all-time.
Sara Davis (2001-04)…
A teammate of Long's, Davis played libero and outside hitter for Charleston from 2001 to 2004. She was SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2001, earning First Team All-SoCon that season. She added All-SoCon Second Team honors in 2002 and 2004, while making the All-Tournament team in 2004. She was a part of NCAA Tournament teams in 2002 and 2004, and ranks sixth all-time at CofC with 1416 digs. She is still tied for fourth all-time with 133 career matches played. Her 27 kills against Chattanooga in 2001 mark the most in a four-set match in CofC history.
Cole Dawley (2007-10)…
Dawley (2007-10) was a part of two NCAA tournament teams and goes down as one of the top setters in CofC history. She was the SoCon Rookie of the Year in 2007 and the SoCon Player of the Year in 2010, becoming just the second player in league history to win both awards. Dawley was a three-time AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention recipient, and a three-time All-SoCon First Team honoree. She ranks fourth all-time with 3737 assists, the most in the 25-point era. She also ranks fourth all-time in hitting percentage (.323) and eighth all-time in digs (1331).
Elyse Chubb (2008-11)…
Chubb led College of Charleston as a middle blocker from 2008-11, advancing to an NCAA Tournament in 2009. Along with Dawley, she is one of four Charleston players that were selected All-SoCon First Team three times. In her other year, she was selected the SoCon Freshman of the Year. Chubb ranks 10th all-time with 1218 career kills, and is second all-time with a career attack percentage of .336. She is second all-time with 486 career total blocks, finishing in the top 10 with 1509.0 career points. She still holds the school record for highest attack percentage in a single match, hitting .800 against The Citadel with 10 kills.
Sarah Havel (2008-11)…
Teaming with Chubb in the middle of the Charleston net was Havel, a middle blocker from 2008-11. Havel was a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American and a two-time All-SoCon First Team recipient. She was named AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention in 2011 and earned SoCon All-Tournament team honors in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Havel finished fourth all-time with 463 total blocks, including 83 solo rejections. Her .295 career attack percentage ranks eighth all-time, as she finished 1,032 career kills. Havel holds the all-time record for most total blocks in a match with 17 against Elon in 2010.
Darcy Dorton (2012-13)…
The most recent inductee concluded her two years at College of Charleston this past spring. Dorton played in 2012 and 2013 after transferring from Penn State where she won a national championship in 2009. She was a two-time AVCA All-America Honorable Mention recipient, the first player in CofC history to be a two-time All-American. After leading College of Charleston to the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament victory and first win over a ranked team (No. 23 Miami) in 2012, she followed it up with a remarkable senior season in 2013, becoming the first player in CAA history to win the Preseason Player of the Year, Player of the Year and Tournament MVP in the same season. She ranks third all-time with 3.92 kills/set and 4.31 points/set over her career. Her 27 kills against Miami tie for the fifth-most ever in a single match and the most in an NCAA match in CofC history.
