MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston completed an unbeaten run through the Diadora/Spinx Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament hosted by Furman with a 4-0 handling of North Florida on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium on Friday evening.
The Cougars' (2-2-0) offensive outburst came on the heels of a brace by Nico Rittmeyer who notched his second and third goals of the season. Erik Clark and Frederick Norrevig also got in on the scoring to stretch CofC's lead.
“This was a great weekend for Cougar soccer,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “Both games, everyone worked hard and the quality of our play has improved. We are extremely happy with the results.”
Rittmeyer's first goal – and the ultimate game winner – came in the 12th minute on a Cougar free kick which he got a head to and flicked over the Osprey keeper, with Tucker Coons earning an assist on the play.
That marked the only goal of the opening period, despite an 8-2 Cougar shot advantage after 45 minutes.
In the 60th minute, the Ospreys, frustrated from chasing the match, made a heavy tackle in the box which saw Simen Solstad sent off with a red card and granted the Cougars a penalty kick. Rittmeyer stepped the ball and his attempt left nothing to be desired as the Cougars went up 2-0.
In the 75th minute, Troy Peterson crossed a ball over the top of the defense which set up Clark one-on-one with the goalkeeper and led to Charleston's third goal.
The Cougars added one more with less than a minute remaining in regulation, this time with Daan Brinkman playing a ball over the top and Norrevig scoring to the right side of the net.
The Cougars, despite a pair of wins at the tournament, were denied the tournament crown on account of tournament host Furman going 2-0 and edging the Cougars on account of a goal-differential tie breaker.
Rittmeyer, Peterson and goalkeeper Brian Kilgallon were named all-tournament selections. Kilgallon made three saves Sunday afternoon for his second consecutive shutout.
CofC will prepare for a pair of matches at the University of Akron Tournament in Akron, Ohio. The Cougars are slated to face Hartford on Friday, Sept. 12 and Central Florida on Sunday, Sept. 14.
