AKRON, Ohio – The College of Charleston men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 45 Hartford in the opening game of the University of Akron Tournament at FirstEnergy Stadium and Cub Cadet Field on Friday evening.
The Cougars (2-3-0) saw their winning streak snapped despite playing equal to the Redhawks in an end-to-end, evenly matched affair.
Charleston ended the match with a 13-12 shot advantage, but was kept off the board after averaging three goals per game over their two-match winning streak.
The Cougars were led in shots by Erik Clark who attempted five on the night. CofC's willingness and ability to push forward proved to be the bane of the match for The College, as Hartford's goal came on a counter-attack after CofC had pushed numbers forward in the offensive third.
When their attacking cross into the box was cut out, the Cougars were unable to retreat quickly enough to slow the Redhawk attack going against the grain. CofC did stop the initial attempt and cleared a ball off the goal line, but the ball found its way into the midsection of Hartford's Jeff Tryon who ushered it into the back of the net for the 70th minute marker, the match's lone goal.
The Cougars were led by the play of senior midfielder Troy Peterson who offered a full 90 minutes and attempted two shots, in addition to winning balls and dictating the midfield battle.
Charleston will look to put the result behind them when the Cougars return to action against Central Florida on Sunday in their final game of the Akron tourney. The Cougars and Knights are set to kick off at 12 p.m. from Cub Cadet Field.
