CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team successfully kicked off its 2015 campaign on Saturday at the University of North Carolina Open, a one-day indoor meet held at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse.
Leading the way for the Cougars on the track was sophomore distance-runner Cara Butcher, who posted an impressive 3K time of 10:30.53, good enough for third place overall. Butcher – a native of North Massapequa, N.Y. – looks set to carry over the momentum gained from a fantastic cross country season in to the spring track and field campaign, adding yet another scoring threat for the Cougars.
Also looking sharp on the track were fellow distance competitors Carlee Cassidy and Kora Kostka, who both set new personal best marks in the mile event, with times of 5:08.66 and 5:10.48 – finishing in second and fourth-place, respectively.
In the field, it was 2014 CAA shot put champion Tiffany Sisk who impressed, hitting a distance of 14.62 meters in the weight throw (a new personal best), while teammate Lexi Wilkins also performed well, setting a new PR with a throw of 13.36. Adding to the her fine day, Sisk – also the 2012 SoCon outdoor shot put champion – finished second in her signature event, with a mark of 14.62 meters.
“We saw some really positive things today,” said College of Charleston assistant track and field coach Ben Yocum. “We still have a lot of work to do, but it was great to see the team competing again and it's my belief that we are in a better position now from a total program standpoint than we have been at least in recent memory – possibly ever.”
