LEXINGTON, KY. – College of Charleston women's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 29 Kentucky at the Wildcats' home turf at the Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington. The match marks the second the Cougars have played in 24 hours after facing Marshall on Saturday in Huntington, W.Va.
Junior Katherine Schofield earned the team's lone point with a 6-3, 6-2, 1-0 triumph over Kelsey Dieters in the No. 3 singles spot. Schofield had lost a tight three-set match yesterday at Marshall and is now 1-1 in singles action.
The trip to Kentucky was extra special for senior Samantha Maddox, who is a native of Lexington and who used to play junior tennis at Boone Tennis Complex. CofC head coach Angelo Anastopoulo tries to arrange at least one trip to each of his players' hometowns during their four years at Charleston.
“It was an emotional day for Samantha to get to travel home and play in front of her friends and family, and on a court that she had spent so many hours on as a junior,” Anastopoulo said.
Maddox had a slow start in singles against No. 125 Aldila Sutjadi on court one, dropping the first five games before finding her groove and winning the next three games. She had a chance to win a fourth game before eventually yielding a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Sutjadi.
Freshman Helena Nyikos made her debut for Charleston, competing in the fifth spot in singles and pairing with Maddox as the third seed in doubles. Nyikos eventually fell to Kirsten Lewis 7-5, 6-2 after a strong start.
“Helena continues to get better every match and has proven she can play at a high level,” Anastopoulos said of Nyikos.
Kentucky (1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. Schofield and senior Jenny Falcone took on the 19th ranked duo of Nadia Ravita and Sutjiadi. The Cougar pair lost 6-2 to finish the weekend 1-1 in doubles. Nyikos and Maddox also gave up a 6-2 decision on court two.
CofC women's tennis (0-2) will finish its three-match tour in Winston-Salem when the team takes on No. 60 Wake Forest. The match begins at 10 am and can be followed here: http://www.wakeforestsports.com/sports/w-tennis/spec-rel/live-video.html
