Cougars Clinch No. 4 Seed Despite Loss In Double Overtime At No. 21 Elon

ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell to No. 21 Elon 1-0 in the final minutes of double overtime at Rudd Field.
Despite the loss, the Cougars (7-7-2, 4-3-1 CAA) still ended the regular season finishing fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings. CofC, who posted their best finish in the CAA since joining the conference in 2013, will host #5 James Madison (4-9-4, 3-3-2 CAA) in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Patriots Point. CofC played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw with the Dukes at Patriots Point back on Oct. 10.
In the other quarterfinal, #3 Delaware (9-6-3, 5-2-1 in CAA) will entertain #6 UNCW (8-6-3, 3-3-2 in the CAA). The semifinals will be played on Friday, November 13 in Hempstead, N.Y. with top-seeded Hofstra (11-7, 6-2 in CAA) facing the CofC/JMU winner and #2 Elon (13-4, 6-2 in CAA) meeting the Delaware/UNCW winner. The championship game is set for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15 and will be televised live on the American Sports Network.
Elon (13-4, 6-2 CAA) outshot The College 28-15 throughout the 108 minutes played at Rudd Field. Nathan Diehl scored the golden goal on a header to the back right post in the 108th minute. James Brace set up Diehl on a perfect cross from the left side of the box. Hamilton Carlin and Adan Noel led the offensive attack for CofC with four shots apiece. Goalkeeper Kevin Shields made four saves in the loss.
