MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell to James Madison 3-2 Saturday evening at Patriots Point.
“James Madison had three great finishes,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “I thought we outplayed them, we had the ball more, we had more shots and we had chances but they put away theirs. I have a lot of respect for their team. I also respect the heck out of my team for not quitting. Down 3-0, it's hard to find the fight to make a comeback but we found it and should have tied the game”
The Cougars (7-8-2, 4-3-1 CAA) trailed 3-0 with just fifteen minutes remaining but late goals from sophomore Leland Archer and junior Nicolas Jeausseran made the game a nail-biter in the final minutes of regulation.
James Madison (5-9-4, 3-3-2 CAA) scored two first half goals to give themselves a comfortable lead coming out of halftime. Tom Fouhy scored in the 13th minute while Aaron Baptise-Ward scored in the 38th minute; both were the player's first goals of the season. The Dukes came out in the second half and extended their lead in 51st minute on Toby Appleton's third goal of the season.
CofC outshot the Dukes all night and finished the match with an 18-9 advantage. Hamilton Carlin nearly had two headers go in the first half but JMU keeper Kyle Morton made two of his seven saves on the night on those shots. In the second half, the Cougars played aggressive moving Leland Archer to forward instead of his normal position on the defensive line.
Archer broke the scoring draught for the Cougars in the 74th minute on an assist from junior Nico Rittmeyer. Archer is now tied with Rittmeyer for the most goals on the season with four. CofC struck again in the 84th minute on a free kick from Nicolas Jeausseran to bring the game to 3-2 with five minutes remaining.
The Cougars got off multiple shots in the final minutes but could not connect on any of them to send the game to overtime. The College finishes with their best conference finish since joining the CAA in 2013 and had their best record since 2010.
“I'm so proud of my boys. We have lots of training coming up this offseason and a tough spring. We will have a lot of players back who were injured this year, which is very encouraging. We have a very deep squad already for the spring and of course for next fall.”
