WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Braving the inhospitable weather conditions that have plagued the entire mid-Atlantic region, the College of Charleston track and field team found respite on Saturday at the JDL Fast Track, where the Cougars qualified a further four student-athletes for the ECAC Indoor Championships in early March.
“It was a very good all-around team performance,” said head coach Amy Seago. “We set another school record in the distance medley relay – qualifying for the ECAC's – and I think we are making progress. Now we'll get back to work and continue to train as we prepare for our home-hosted meet on March 6.”
On Saturday, it was the distance medley team – comprised of Kornelia Kostka (Kielce, Poland), Deanna King (Sumter, S.C.), Hayley McMahon (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Carlee Cassidy (Lindsay, Ontario) – who set the tone, breaking the previous school record of 12:15.68, with a mark of 12:10.70. Finishing just behind Duke, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State, the time proved good enough for fourth place overall. The distance medley team will join individual standouts Julisa Tindall (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Tiffany Sisk (Easley, S.C.) – both of whom already qualified for the Indoor Championship.
In what has been a season of great performances, sophomore distance runner Cara Butcher (North Massapequa, N.Y.), continued to impress, setting another new personal best in the 5K with a second-place time of 17:52.25. Also performing well on the track was Tindall, who had a good day in both the high jump and long jump, hitting marks of 1.70 and 5.42 meters, respectively.
The Cougars talented cadre of throwers also shined bright as Lexi Wilkins (Spartanburg, S.C.), Sisk and Alex Coyle (Corunna, Ontario) all made the finals of the weight throw.
Next up for the Cougars is an action-packed day of competition on March 6, where the team will be participating in both the ECAC Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass., as well as at home where The College (in conjunction with The Citadel) will host the annual Palmetto Classic – a one-day meet to be held at the Park West Track and Field facility in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
