CHARLESTON, S.C. – Battling through cold temperatures and heavy winds, The College of Charleston track and field team racked up five first-place finishes on Friday at the home-hosted Palmetto Classic.
On a breezy day at the Park West track and field facility in Mount Pleasant, S.C., the Cougars – competing in their first outdoor event of the season – were paced by a sensational day from junior RoShani Glover, who won both the long and triple jump events with marks of 5.3 and 11.1 meters, respectively.
“It was nice to be home,” said head coach Amy Seago. “Weather was better than originally forecast but some teams dropped out to the expected bad weather. Therefore, the meet ended up being a bit smaller. But with that being said, it's always nice to have wins and I thought RoShani had a very nice opener, particularly in the long jump.”
Also performing well for the Cougars in the field was junior Ciera Holston, who beat out Phieffer's Allison Webb with a distance of 30.04 meters.
Leading the way for The College on the track was the event winning duo of Alexia Neal and Marissa Small-Towns. Neal dominated the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.77 while Small-Towns put on a strong showing in the 800 meter run, beating out teammate Aisha Maddox by just over a second and a half to claim the win. The 800 was an impressive event for the Cougars top-to-bottom as Kallie Golicher also ran a gutsy 2:11.34 – good enough for eighth place.
“Home meets are especially nice for us because we get to have the whole group chip in,” said Seago. “It was a successful day for us, and now we're looking forward to next week and beyond as we continue to get stronger as a unit.
Six Cougars were noticeably absent from Friday's proceedings as they are set to take part in the ECAC Indoor Championships. Representing the maroon and white in Boston, Mass., this weekend are senior thrower Tiffany Sisk, sophomore high-jumper Julisa Tindall and the Cougars' distance medley team, comprised of Kora Kostka, Lorna Doucette, Carlee Cassidy and Hayley McMahon. Next up in outdoor competition for CofC is the UNCW Classic, a one day meet hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Friday, Mar. 13.
