JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Highlighted by a new school record in the distance medley relay, the College of Charleston track and field team continued their strong start to the indoor season this past weekend at the Buccaneer Invitational, a two-day meet hosted by Eastern Tennessee State University.
Comprised by junior Kornelia Kostka, freshman Deanna King, senior Hayley McMahon and sophomore Carlee Cassidy, the Cougars distance medley unit smashed the previous mark of 12:19.30, with a 12:15.68 showing – good enough for second-place overall.
Also performing well on the track was sophomore Cara Butcher who continues to set new personal bests; this time in the 3000 meter run, where she finished in fourth place, with a time of 10:18.33, less than one second behind Cassidy, who clocked in at 10:17.95.
King – a native of nearby Sumter, S.C. – was the Cougars track athlete of the meet, achieving a new personal best mark in the 200m dash, registering an impressive first leg in the 4x400m relay, as well as contributing to the Cougars' record-breaking medley team.
In the field, senior thrower Tiffany Sisk reached 13.80 meters in the shot put, while freshman Sarah Lynch had a great first outing in the pentathlon, finishing in ninth just ahead of teammate Julia Petruch.
Up next for the CofC Track and Field is a trip to JDL Fast Track, where the Cougars will participate in the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, on Saturday, Feb. 21.
