WILMINGTON, N.C. – Getting their first look at in-conference opposition, the College of Charleston track and field team battled through heavy rains over the weekend to claim a fourth-place finish at the UNCW Invitational.
“I thought we performed well and showed continued progress this weekend,” said College of Charleston head coach Amy Seago. “Conditions were rainy all day Saturday which made it tough on some folks battling injury. The good news though, is that we showed tenacity and perseverance in the circumstances.”
On the track, the Cougars were paced by a superb double from senior Hayley McMahon, who finished third and fourth in the 400 and 800 meter runs, checking in with times of 57.51 and 2:16.63, respectively. Distance runners Carlee Cassidy and Cara Butcher also impressed for The College, finishing the 1500 meter run in fifth and sixth place; while hurdler Alexia Neal notched a third place finish in the 400 with a time of 1:05.90.
In the field, CofC's efforts were championed by throwers Tiffany Sisk and Alex Coyle. Sisk – fresh off a great effort at the ECAC Indoor Championships last week – finished second in the shot put with a mark of 13.18 meters. In the hammer throw, Sisk finished third, while Coyle finished fourth, hitting a distance of 44.44 meters.
Just one weekend removed from two event victories at the home-hosted Palmetto Classic, jumper RoShani Glover picked up another win in the triple jump, barely edging out UNCW's Chryssandra Tatum for the victory.
As a team, the Cougars finished fourth out of12 competing institutions, falling just behind fellow Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competitors UNCW and Towson.
“UNCW and Towson outscored us because right now they have greater depth than we do,” said Seago. “However, we made some improvements and I know our entire crew will continue to get faster and more powerful in the coming weeks. We have a lot of promise moving forward.”
Next up for The College is Thursday's (March 19) Shamrock Invitational, a three-day meet hosted Coastal Carolina at the Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
