MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team continued its strong start to the outdoor season this weekend, impressing at the Shamrock Invitational, a three-day meet hosted by the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University at Doug Shaw Stadium.
“It was a great weekend,” said CofC head coach Amy Seago. “Across the board, we were very good. We set tons of new personal bests and I'm proud of the way we competed. We were really firing on all cylinders.
Over the course of the three-day event – which was individually scored, meaning there were no final team standings – the Cougars were paced by a multitude of strong performances both on the track and in the field.
Headlining for The College was another terrific display from two-time conference champion Tiffany Sisk. A native of Easley, S.C., Sisk finished second out of 51 competitors in the shot-put, hitting a new personal best mark of 14.61 meters. Also throwing well in the field for CofC was sophomore Alex Coyle who finished ninth in the hammer and 10th in the discus throw.
After claiming three event victories in her previous two outings, junior RoShani Glover kept her hot streak alive with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump, hitting a distance of 12.02 meters.
It was a banner weekend on the track for the Cougars, led by an impressive triple from senior Hayley McMahon, who finished in fourth and fifth-place, respectively, in the 800 meter and mile run, before also chipping in with a strong final leg in the 4x400 meter relay. Fellow seniors Lorna Doucette and Aisha Maddox also put in strong showings in the 200 meter dash and 800 meter runs, finishing with times of 25.67 and 2:22.93 – the latter of which was good enough for fifth-place.
Representing for the freshman were Deanna King and Marissa Small-Towns. King claimed an event victory in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.68, while Small-Towns finished second out of 37 non-seeded competitors in the 800 meter run, finishing with a time of 2:19.26.
The College's cadre of distance runners also shined bright at the Shamrock, led by Cara Butcher and Mary Kate Brelsford. The ever-improving Butcher capped the meet with a new personal best in the 3000 meter run, finishing in third with a time of 10:11.21. Brelsford – a native of Ocean City, N.J. – finished the same event in eighth-place with a time of 10:31.71
Next up for The College is this weekend's Spring Break Invitational, a two-day meet hosted by the University of North Florida at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
