CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston student-athletes Devon Reed and Alexia Neal have been tapped as this year's male and female recipients of the ExCEL Award for Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year.
This year's ExCEL awards presentation will take place on Wednesday, March 25, at 4:00 p.m. at the Sottile Theatre located at 44 George Street. Now in its tenth year, the ExCEL Awards Program is designed to honor students, faculty, staff, and neighbors (individuals, agencies, or companies) for their dedication to excellence and enhancing diversity on campus and in the community. This dedication is displayed through teaching, athleticism, student leadership, departmental support, or commitment to the community.
Neal, a junior track and field standout from Beaufort, S.C., has been one of the Cougars most consistent competitors over the past three seasons, representing the maroon and white with distinction, both on the track and in the classroom. Neal currently owns the second best 400 meter hurdles time in program history and in addition to her collegiate exploits, also represented Belize at the Central American Championships in Tegucigalpa, Honduras in June, nabbing two second place finishes in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles. Neal is currently pursuing a degree in Biology, while also minoring in Psychology.
Reed, a five-foot-10 senior infielder for the CofC baseball team, appeared in 22 contests including three starts as the designated hitter last season for a Cougar outfit that finished the season ranked No. 16 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, after a spirited run which took the Cougars to their second-ever NCAA Super Regional. As a senior, Reed has made six appearances and is batting .250 with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. A native of Lincoln, Del., Reed is set to graduate this May with a degree in Accounting.
