
Charleston Defeats South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Redshirt senior Ethan Plyler hit a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the ninth as College of Charleston baseball beat South Carolina, 6-4, Tuesday evening at Founders Park.
Sophomore Alex LaCoste went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the victory while freshman Austin Wiegandt fanned six Gamecocks across four innings in his first collegiate start.

CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST SOUTH CAROLINA:
- LaCoste drove in his first run of the ballgame in the first on an RBI fielder's choice.
- In his next at bat in the third, the sophomore sent a ball over the left field wall for a three-run shot to give Charleton the 4-0 advantage.
- South Carolina chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the fifth and sixth before tying the ballgame in the seventh.
- Plyler came up clutch in the top of the ninth, doubling to the left-center gap to plate graduate Dylan Johnson and LaCoste.
- Wiegandt started for the Cougars Tuesday, fanning six batters in the no decision. The righty yielded a long run on one hit and one walk while hitting three batters.
- Redshirt sophomore Ryan Hench picked up his first career win, tossing 2.1 scoreless out of the bullpen.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston is 8-36 overall against South Carolina and have won both meetings in the Chad Holbrook Era.
- Tuesday's win was Holbrook's first time back at Founders Park after spending nearly two decades as a member of the Gamecock coaching staff.
- LaCoste picked up his sixth multi-hit performance and fifth multi-RBI game. LaCoste has had multiple hits in four of the last five ballgames.
- Plyler collected his team-best sixth multi-RBI contest.
- Freshman Jake Amman went 2-for-4 with two runs, his tenth game of the year with two-plus hits.
- Amman, Johnson and LaCoste each scored two runs Tuesday.
- LaCoste has hits in 17 of the last 18 games, has driven in 19 with nine extra-base hits and has a 1.142 OPS in that span.
