GAINSEVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Carlee Cassidy set a new school record in the steeplechase to lead the College of Charleston track and field team at the vaunted Florida Relays this past weekend, a two-day meet hosted the University of Florida.
Cassidy, a native of Lindsay, Ontario who competed in the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships this past summer, was the Cougars most outstanding performer in Gainesville, running 10:38.26 in the 3000 meter steeplechase on Saturday to finish twelfth out of 34 competitors.
The Cougars almost claimed a second school record on the track when senior Hayley McMahon put forth an equally tenacious effort in the 1500 meter run, but came up just a half second short, en route to another twelfth-place finish.
In the field, sophomore high jumper Julisa Tindall continued to impress, clearing a height of 1.78 meters to finish eighth. Tindall has been superb for the Cougars recently, setting a new outdoor school record at the Spring Break Invitational last weekend after finishing second at the ECAC Indoor Championships earlier this season.
Defending CAA champion Tiffany Sisk was also solid at the relays, putting together a strong series in the shot put, hitting a mark of 14.11 meters to finish seventh.
“Overall, this was a very positive experience for us,” said College of Charleston head coach Amy Seago. “We were able to gain some championship level experience and I'm very proud of the class with which our ladies competed.”
After taking a week off to focus on their academics, the Cougars will return to action on Thursday, April 16, in Walnut Calif., for the Mt. Sac Relays. A split squad, the Cougars will also be sending competitors to both the Georgia Tech and Charlotte Invitationals that Friday, April 17.
