ATLANTA, Ga. – In their final tune-up for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, the College of Charleston track and field team rounded out a strong performance at the Georgia Tech Invitational with two new school records and numerous personal bests.
“It was a very good meet for us,” said College of Charleston head coach Amy Seago. “We are performing well and I'm excited about our confidence level heading in to the conference championships. I'm very proud of the girls and all of their hard work.”
Headlining for the Cougars were the performances of senior Hayley McMahon and junior Alexia Neal who set new school records in the 800 meter run and 400 meter hurdles, respectively. Competing against some of the nation's best, McMahon clocked in with a time of 2:09.82 in the 800 meter run, good enough for sixth-place out of 63 competitors, while Neal broke former Cougar Mary Zolga's program best time in the 400 meter hurdles, with a mark of 1:02.28.
Adding to the meet's success were the personal best displays of Cara Butcher – who broke her previous top mark by an incredible 16 seconds – , Rachel Leder in the 100 meter dash and senior sprinter Lorna Doucette in the 200 meter dash.
Distance runners Mary Kate Brelsford and Kallie Golicher also set new top marks in the 5K, while Charleston native Danielle Sams was just a single second off a new personal best of her own.
In the field, it was sophomore Bertice Jones who led the way, setting a new PR in the hammer throw with a mark of 35.32 meters.
Also participating in the festivities were members of The College's men's cross country team, including senior Mackenzie Johnston, who capped his career in the maroon and white with another solid showing in the men's 5K.
“Special hats off to Mack,” said Seago. “He's had a stellar career and I'm extremely proud of everything that he's accomplished..”
Up next for the Cougars is the 2015 CAA Championships, to be held May 1-2 at Zable Stadium on campus at the College of William and Mary. For more information on this year's main event, you can visit the CAA's Championship home page, here: http://bit.ly/1D5GEsY.
