CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four players scored in double figures including a team-high 16 points from freshman Marquise Pointer (Jonesboro, Ark.) as College of Charleston edged Delaware, 59-58, on Saturday at TD Arena.

The Cougars (12-7, 4-4 CAA) continue on a season of firsts under second-year head coach claiming their first-ever win over the Blue Hens (5-14, 0-8 CAA) since joining the Colonial Athletic Association in July of 2013. Their last win against Delaware in the seven-game all-time series was in the championship game of the CofC State Farm Classic in 2000 as members of the Southern Conference.

In the first half of play, CofC shot 37.9 percent from the floor (11-of-29) against Delaware's zone defense, while the Blue Hens shot 57.1 percent and led 31-29 at halftime.

Pointer helped the Cougars take over the lead 12 seconds into the second half on one of his four made three-pointers of the game which sparked a 14-6 run.

The Blue Hens, however, cut the lead down to two, 52-50, with 2:14 remaining in regulation, but another three-pointer by Pointer extended it back out to five, 55-50, with 1:48 left on the clock.

Sophomore Cameron Johnson (Athens, Ga.) and freshman Jarrell Brantley (Columbia, S.C.) made key free throws in the final seconds, but Delaware's Kory Holden hit a long-range three with six seconds left to trim the Cougars lead back down to one, 59-58.

Brantley was fouled with 12 seconds remaining as Marvin Davis-King grabbed the defensive rebound and Holden heaved the half-court three which missed at the buzzer.

Brantley turned in a productive night with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Johnson and sophomore Evan Bailey (Canton, Ohio) had 10 points each.

Davis-King recorded a double-double performance with a game-high 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Blue Hens, who have now dropped 11-straight games and are still searching for their first conference win.

Up next, CofC hosts Northeastern (12-9, 4-4) on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena. The game will be televised live locally on MyTV Charleston and tickets are still available for purchase by calling (843) 953-COFC or by going online at: www.CofCSports.com/tickets

POSTGAME NOTES

· With only eight scholarship players on its active roster, College of Charleston went with the starting five of freshman Marquise Pointer, sophomore Cameron Johnson, junior Payton Hulsey, freshman Jarrell Brantley and redshirt freshman Nick Harris for the sixth-consecutive ballgame (3-3).

· With the win, the Cougars claimed its first-ever win over Delaware as a third-year member of the CAA. The Blue Hens had previously won the last four-straight meetings between both schools. CofC last defeated Delaware in 2000 as members of the Southern Conference. The last six games in the seven-game series have been decided in single digits.

· CofC has now limited seven of its eight CAA opponents to 65 points-or-less holding Delaware to 58 points.

· Marquise Pointer reached double figures for the 10th time this season with a team-high 16 points against Delaware. It marked the third time to lead the Cougars in the scoring column. He also tied his career best with four three-pointers in a career-high tying 38 minutes of action.

· Cameron Johnson extended his double-digit scoring streak to four-consecutive games with 10 points against Delaware. It tied a season-and career-best streak in double figures.

· Evan Bailey came off the bench and has now scored in double figures in three of the last four contests for the Cougars. He made three of the team's 10 three-pointers in the ballgame – the most made by CofC in a single game this season in CAA play.

· The Cougars welcomed back former men's basketball star and two-time Academic All-American Jody Lumpkin (1999-2001), who was inducted into the CofC Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday. He was named Southern Conference Player of the Year in 2001 and led the Cougars to three-consecutive SoCon regular-season championship titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and a NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. Lumpkin still ranks 18th all-time in career scoring (1,269 points), ninth all-time in career rebounding (710) and first all-time in career blocks (238).

POSTGAME QUOTES

College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant

On the game …

“I thought our guys showed a lot of reliance. We played a tough game in Baltimore on Thursday (at Towson) and we exerted a lot of energy in Baltimore. They did a great job today.”

On maintaining a lead against Delaware in the second half …

“We haven't played a game against a team who play all zone exclusively, so there were a lot of open shots. Our guys were in-between whether or not to take the shot. We just try to stay positive with the guys and tell them to take the shots that present themselves and focus on defense.”

On four players scoring in double figures …

“They did a great job and looked for each other on dribble penetration. We talk about getting in the gaps and finding your teammates. I thought we did a great job with driving and giving the guys open threes.”

College of Charleston Sophomore Guard Cameron Johnson

On the game …

“We definitely have gotten tested. In the last one (at Towson), really all of the games in conference we've played, have been fairly close. So, we have been in this situation before. In the first half, we had to feel them (Delaware) out. Their zone was tough. But, a win is a win.”

On being able to finish a game …

“It's a lot of mental preparation. It's watching film and learning from mistakes. Because in the heat of the battle, you are used to going back to bad habits.”

College of Charleston Freshman Guard Marquise Pointer

On winning another close game …

“We've been preparing and we've been learning from our mistakes. We had a better week this week during practice and we just brought it to both games this week.”
