CHARLESTON, S.C. - Liza Fieldsend of the College of Charleston women's tennis team will represent the entire CAA this weekend when she heads off to Malibu, Calif. to take part in the Oracle ITA Junior Masters.
The new tournament is designed to bring the best representatives from each conference together to play in one grand tournament. Fieldsend punched her ticket after becoming the 2016 CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer, a distinction she earned by knocking off No. 108 Elizaveta Nemchinov of William & Mary by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"It's quite an honor to make our first trip to the west coast, representing not only the College, but being the representative for one of the most outstanding tennis conferences in the CAA," Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said.
In singles, Fieldsend starts off by playing against Viktoriya Lushkova. Lushkova played first flight for a Oklahoma State team that got all the way to the NCAA Championship game in 2016 before succumbing to Stanford 4-3.
In addition to singles play, Fieldsend will take part in mixed doubles action. She'll be paired up with Jaime Barajas of Utah State, and will open play against Meible Chi and Ryotaro Matsumura or Duke and Kentucky respectively.
"I hope that by participating out here will increase our recruiting exposure to all the talented tennis players out here on the west coast," Anastopoulo said.
The tournament is a national level tournament, and like ITA Regionals next week, will help determine seeding. Tournament sponsor Oracle provided all the participants the chance to take part free of cost.
