MALIBU, CALIF. - Liza Fieldsend wrapped up her weekend in the Golden State on Saturday after squaring off against some of the top talent in the country at the Oracle ITA Junior Masters on the campus of Pepperdine.
Fieldsend opened up play with some mixed doubles action, teaming up with Jaime Barajas of Utah State. Barajas was named the Mountain West Player of the year after sporting a 24-9 singles record in 2016. The two played against a combination of Meible Chi of Duke and Ryotaro Matsumura of Kentucky, and ultimately succumbed 6-3.
Shortly thereafter, Fieldsend met up with Viktoriya Lushkova, an Oklahoma State standout who helped lead the Cowgirls to an NCAA Championship appearance last year. The Ukrainian proved too much, handing Fieldsend a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. Afterword, Fieldsend drwew Abilene Christian's Lucile Pothier in the consolation bracket, and after a tight contest, fell for the final time 6-4, 6-2.
"Though she didn't get the results she was looking for, Liza still did a wonderful job representing herself, the College of Charleston, and the CAA," Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "This has been a magnificent atmosphere, and it's been an honor to have been a part of it."
Fieldsend will rejoin the Cougars next week when they travel to Chapel Hill for the ITA Carolinas Regionals next weekend. That event runs from Friday the 21st through the following Monday.
