Women’s Soccer’s Streak Snapped in 2-1 Defeat
10/2/2016 3:53:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Despite winning the shot-battle 20-13, the College of Charleston women's soccer team's (8-4-1; 1-1-1 vs. CAA) lengthy unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday as the Northeastern Huskies (8-5-1; 3-1 vs. CAA) escaped Patriots Point with a 2-1 win.
• For the second straight contest, the College found their way on the board thanks to a Laura Ortega corner kick. With 13 minutes remaining in regulation, the Spaniard sailed the ball to the far end of the box, where a waiting Rio Speller-Drews headed in her third goal of the season. Ortega would finish the game leading all players in shots with seven.
• The Huskies got on the board early with a corner of their own in the seventh minute. Hannah Lopiccolo sent one in to the center of a scrum of bodies, where the ball landed at the feet of a waiting Mackenzie Dowd who finished down low for the score. Later, ten minutes into the second half, Carly Wilhelm was the beneficiary of a deflection deep in the box, and put that one away to put NU up 2-0.
• With the loss, the Cougars' unbeaten streak finally came to an end at nine games in a row, matching a school record.
"It was a game of two great CAA teams out there playing," head coach Christian Michner said. "Northeastern is always one of the top teams in the league and they impressed me a lot, but we went step for step with them. I thought the chances we created were excellent and their keeper had a nice game."
The Cougars now transition to a four-game road-swing against CAA opponents, their longest home-absence of the regular season.
"We've played well on the road and we've played well at home," Michner said. "We've got to make sure we keep doing the things we do well that got us here, and we're going to need to make sure we're mentally tough as we go to some of these tough environments."
Things begin with a Friday night showdown against the Drexel Dragons (7-5-1; 3-1 vs. CAA) on Vidas Field at 7 p.m.
