Cougars Tie Tribe 1-1, Clinch First-Ever CAA Tournament Berth

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (10-6-3; 3-3-3 vs. CAA) pulled off a historic feat in Sunday's Senior Day matchup with William & Mary (10-7-1; 4-4-1 vs. CAA), tying the Tribe 1-1 and punching their ticket to the program's first CAA Tournament in school-history.
• Laura Ortega struck first in the contest when she received a ball deep inside the box from an opportunistic Raymara Barreto feed in the 32nd minute. Ortega gathered the ball and sent it in low to put the College up 1-0 late in the period.
• The College honored its seniors prior to the game, all five of whom received playing time. Lauren Killian pawed away four saves on the afternoon, while Suzi Vallez played a full 110 minutes in her final collegiate home game.
• The Tribe were able to respond late when the Cougars were hit with a questionable foul inside the box, granting William & Mary a penalty kick opportunity. Killian guessed correctly on the try, but was just a hair late in getting to the corner as Rachel Moore was able to knot the game up at 1-1, which would hold on to be the final score through two overtime periods.
"I'm extremely proud of my team, not just for today, but what they've been able to do all season," head coach Christian Michner said. "They've fought really hard and been very consistent, and we're really excited for our first CAA Tournament. Today they dug in and scrapped hard, and we're just elated to keep on going."
• With the result, the Cougars were able to qualify for the CAA Tournament as the sixth seed, and will as such play No. 3 seeded James Madison (8-10; 5-4 vs. CAA) in the opening round.
"We'll make some adjustments for sure, make sure everybody decompresses from this weekend and gets fresh and sharp," Michner said. "I thought we played well against JMU earlier this year outside of the first two minutes of the game, so we need to sure we're ready to play from the get-go."
That contest is scheduled for Sunday, October 30 at Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Va.
