CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (10-6-3; 3-3-3 vs. CAA) will be competing in its first CAA Tournament in school history Sunday when they travel to Harrisonburg to square off with the No. 3 seeded James Madison Dukes (8-10; 5-4 vs. CAA).
The Cougars clinched the post season last weekend with a pair of ties against Elon and William & Mary. The College and the Phoenix played to a scoreless draw, while CofC and the Tribe put one on the board against one another. Laura Ortega scored first in that one on a feed from Raymara Barreto, but W&M got one back by way of a PK to even the game up.
The College and James Madison played earlier in the season in Harrisonburg, and the Dukes capitalized on a two-goal barrage in the first two minutes to propel themselves to the eventual 4-1 win. However, JMU comes into the contest on a bit of a slump, dropping both contests last weekend to Hofstra and Northeastern and surrendering first place in the CAA in the process.
JMU has relied on Ashley Herndon offensively all year long, as the senior forward has tallied a whopping 27 points (11g, 5a) on the season. In goal, they've at times run with all four keepers on the roster, with Hannah McShea and Olivia Miller seeing the majority of the action. The two have combined for 62 saves on the year.
CofC and JMU will play for the right to advance in the tournament, where the winner will progress onward to a neutral site showdown with Drexel in Boston. In addition to the Cougars and Dukes, there will be one other opening round matchup as the Tribe visit the UNCW Seahawks, the winner of who would progress onward to play Northeastern. The Cougars and Dukes will start play at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
