Cougars Fall To William & Mary, 3-1

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. –William and Mary recorded 13 blocks, and held the College of Charleston volleyball team to a hitting percentage of .133 in a 3-1 win over the league-leading Cougars in Colonial Athletic Association play Friday evening.
 
William & Mary (7-11, 1-4 CAA) won the match by scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-23 and 25-23, while tallying 51 kills and hit .196 in the match. College of Charleston (11-6, 4-1 CAA) suffered its first conference loss of the season and saw its five-match winning streak come to an end. The Cougars recorded 55 kills, 72 digs and seven blocks in the match.
 
Maddie Hills (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) paced the Charleston attack with 16 kills and four blocks, while Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) turned in her sixth straight double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) chipped in 11 kills as Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Elizabeth Hurring (Ocean Springs, Miss.) dished out 29 and 20 assists, respectively. McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) posted 23 digs.
 
Sydney Biniak and Casey Foote led the way for William & Mary with 16 and 15 kills, respectively, as Autumn Brenner turned in a double-double with 10 digs and a match-high 40 assists. Sara Zumbach posted a contest-best 24 digs as Biniak led all blockers with seven stuffs.
 
William & Mary took the first set, 25-20, with an efficient offensive effort that featured 11 kills and a .281 clip on the attack. The Tribe was forced to rally from a 13-11 deficit after Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) capped a 4-0 Cougar spurt with an ace.
 
With Charleston leading 16-12 later in the set, William & Mary strung together eight straight points to claim a 20-16 advantage following a tandem block by Biniak and Katie Primatic. The Tribe would hold on from there to close out the set on a Foote smash, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Charleston responded immediately with a 6-1 run to open the second set – a spurt capped by a Rachel ace that forced the Tribe to burn an early timeout. The Cougars would stretch the margin to 14-5 following a Rachel smash before a block by Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) and Peyton Eisnaugle (Dallas, Texas), followed by a Madison kill, gave the Cougars a 21-12 advantage.
 
William & Mary made a late push and closed the gap to 23-17, but a Tribe service error and a Rachel smash handed Charleston a 25-19 second-set win to even the match at 1-1.
 
The Tribe answered with an 8-3 run to open the third set, as Primatic capped the spurt with a solo stuff to force an early Cougar timeout. An 11-6 stretch by the Cougars would even the tally at 14-14, before Foote capped a 6-3 spurt for the Tribe with a kill to give William & Mary a 20-17 advantage.
 
The Cougars countered moments later with a 5-1 run of their own to reclaim the momentum, and take a 22-21 lead following a kill and an ace from Hills. William & Mary quickly called a timeout and it paid immediate dividends, as the Tribe came out of the break with a 4-1 spurt to rebound for a 25-23 third-set win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Charleston pushed back early in the fourth with a 7-1 run to open the set, and force William & Mary to burn a quick timeout following back-to-back smashes from Madison. The timeout spurned the Tribe on a 12-2 surge, which handed William & Mary a 13-9 lead on a tandem block by Brenner and Primatic.
 
The Cougars would answer moments later with an 11-8 run over the next few minutes - a stretch that included four straight kills from Hills and Freed to trim the margin to 21-20. William & Mary countered once again, as the Tribe quelled the rally with four of the next seven points to hold off the Cougars and seal the win with a 25-23 fourth-set victory.
 
Charleston will close out its Virginia swing in Harrisonburg, Va. on Sunday against James Madison. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
