UCF Advances To Charleston Classic Title Game Halting Cougars' Win Streak

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – B.J. Taylor had 21 points to lead UCF past College of Charleston and into the championship game of the ESPN Gildan Charleston Classic with a 60-40 victory on Friday night at TD Arena.

The Knights (3-0) will play No. 3-ranked Villanova and used some solid defense to do it. UCF held the Cougars (3-1) to 26.8 percent shooting overall (15-of-56) and 15.8 percent on three-pointers (3-of-19). They snapped a three-game run that included wins over The Citadel, Coastal Carolina and Boise State.

Matt Williams and Tank Efianayi had 10 points each for the Knights. 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall had nine points and nine rebounds, playing just 21 minutes because of foul trouble.

Jarrell Brantley and Grant Riller each had 11 points to lead Charleston, who will take on Wake Forest in the third-place game on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.

POSTGAME NOTES
  • Jarrell Brantley had a near double-double performance with a team-high tying 11 points and eight rebounds against UCF.
  • Grant Riller came off the bench and recorded a team-high tying 11 points with two long-range three-pointers late in the second half.
  • Nick Harris guarded UCF center Tacko Fall and limited him to just nine points and nine rebounds in the paint. Fall came into the game averaging 21.0 ppg and 14.0 ppg.
  • This is the second-consecutive game in the all-time series where College of Charleston and UCF met in a tournament setting. The Cougars last faced the Knights in the first round of the inaugural Battle 4 Atlantis in 2011 in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Both schools were previously members of the Trans America Athletic Conference. UCF has won the last two meetings between both schools, but CofC still leads the all-time series, 12-5.
  • The Cougars shot a season-low 26.8 percent from the field and 15.8 percent from beyond the arc.
POSTGAME QUOTES
College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant

On the presence of UCF big man Tacko Fall …
"Early on in the game, we were trying to probe that zone. We got the ball inside against man and zone. He (Tacko Fall) blocked some shots. It just really carried over to our offensive possessions. They went to a zone and got it inside. He accounted for maybe 14-to-16 points of our offense when we had opportunities at the rim. I don't want to discount this game, but I know we won't see another kid like him. I see the impact of how he changes the game with his presence. We couldn't get any two-point baskets all night. Nick did a great job on him. It's just disappointing we didn't perform well."

College of Charleston Sophomore Forward Nick Harris

On guarding UCF big man Tacko Fall …
"The biggest person I ever played against was David Wishon (tallest player in CofC Basketball history at 7-foot-2) when he was here. It takes a lot of energy to move a big guy like that. It's a good challenge though. We didn't change our approach tonight. You just have to go out and play your best. I've seen Shaq (O'Neal) in person and he's still pretty big in comparison."

College of Charleston Sophomore Forward Jarrell Brantley

On the loss …
"There will be nights like this. They (UCF) are a really good team. We did what we were supposed to. We still held them to 60 points, which is still around the range of how we want to play basketball. Defensively, we did our part. We just have to keep working."
