Cougars Finish Off Fall Season with CofC Classic
11/3/2016 3:45:00 PM | Women's Tennis
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team will take part in its final fall action of the season this weekend, when they will host the CofC Classic at Patriots Point.
Liza Fieldsend has had a busy fall campaign after participating in two ITA events over the past month, but the rest of the team hasn't participated in any competition since the CAA Invitational back in September. In that tournament, Christi Woodson and Mara Argyriou earned the distinction of taking the A1 Doubles championship, a feat they'll be looking to replicate over the weekend.
Last year's CofC Classic pitted the Cougars against players from Princeton, Winthrop and Marshall. Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely made it to the A1 Doubles Championship before falling to Amanda Muliawan and Nicole Kalhorn of Princeton by a score of 8-7(2). This year, Winthrop and Marshall will make their returns, but the Tigers will be replaced by Samford as the fourth team.
Marshall comes off an 11-11 season last Spring, going 3-2 against Conference USA opponents. Winthrop meanwhile comes into the weekend as the reigning Big South Champions by way of a 20-5 season. Both the Thundering Herd and Eagles narrowly prevailed over the College last fall with 4-3 victories. Samford rounds things out having come off a 12-12 season in 2016, going 4-3 against SoCon foes. It will be the Bulldogs' second trip to the Lowcountry this fall, having already visited in the CofC Invitational.
The Cougars kick things off Friday with doubles play against Winthrop at noon, followed by singles action against Samford starting at 3 p.m.
