Cougars Capture Five Flight Championships to Conclude CofC Classic
11/6/2016 7:48:00 PM | Women's Tennis
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team wrapped up the third and final day of the CofC Classic Sunday, with CofC players picking up five out of ten possible flight championships.
The Cougars performed admirably in doubles play for the third straight day, picking up two out of three victories against players from Marshall. Mara Argyriou and Christi Woodson were crowed the Flight One Doubles champions after vanquishing Maddie Silver and Rachael Morales 6-3, while the pairing of Helena Nyikos and Anastasia Palaska prevailed by the same margin against Stephanie Smith and Daniels Dankanych to take home the Flight Three Doubles championship.

"I feel like this was the best Fall season I've ever had," Argyriou said. "I love going out and playing with Christi, she sets me up really well. She's really good at the baseline and I've been good at the net. To be able to get the Doubles championship and then celebrate my birthday with my team after, it made my whole Fall really special."
In singles, Rachel McNeely took the Flight Six Singles crown with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Winthrop's Nida Kamal. Mara Argyriou (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) and Anastasia Palaska (2-6, 7-5, 7-5) both suffered three-set defeats, but both had put together a strong enough body of work over the weekend to capture the Flight Four and Flight Five Singles championships anyway. Liza Fieldsend didn't quite pull off the Flight One Championship, but did manage to pull off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win over Caitlin Cridland to finish 2-1 in singles for the weekend.
With their Fall season concluded, the Cougars look ahead to the beginning of the Spring season in just over two months. They'll kick things off on the road against Wake Forest on January 16.
