CHARLESTON, S.C. —College of Charleston baseball alumnus Brett Gardner '05 wrote his name into the Cougar record book once again on Tuesday, when the New York Yankees outfielder became the first former Cougar to win the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, and took home the prestigious honor for the first time in his Major League career.
Gardner was named the American League's top defender in left field on Tuesday, and is the first Yankee to win a Gold Glove Award since Bernie Williams won four straight from 1997-2000.
The 2005 third-round pick ranked second in the AL this season with a .989 fielding percentage and 249 putouts, trailing the Royals' Alex Gordon (.991) and the Tigers' Justin Upton (253), respectively, in those categories. Gardner also ranked third in the AL with nine outfield assists.
Gardner batted .261/.351/.362 with 22 doubles, six triples, seven home runs, 41 RBIs and 16 steals this season in 148 games in his ninth season with the Yankees.
