Brantley, Cougars Edge Elon In 66-62 Road Victory

Box Score

ELON, N.C. – Freshman Jarrell Brantley (Columbia, S.C.) scored 20 points and hit the front end of a one-and-one with 33 seconds left as College of Charleston secured a 66-62 road victory over Elon on Saturday night at Alumni Gym.

The win gave the Cougars (16-9, 8-6 CAA) a winning start to a home stretch where they play four of their final five games on the road. They avenged a 65-64 loss to Phoenix (14-13, 5-9 CAA) on Jan. 16 in Charleston.

Tyler Seibring hit a three-pointer with 1:03 left that cut the Charleston lead down to two, 62-60. Brantley pushed the lead to 63-62 and Luke Eddy pulled the Phoenix within one, 63-62, but Elon could not convert another basket in the final seconds.

Brantley fell short of a double-double grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, while sophomore Cameron Johnson (Athens, Ga.) added a key free throw in the closing seconds to end the night with 15 points.

Junior Payton Hulsey (Memphis, Tenn.) added 10 points including a made jumper that gave the Cougars' their first lead of the ballgame, 29-26, with 1:26 remaining in the first half of play. CofC went into the locker room with a 34-29 lead.

Steve Santa Ana contributed 20 points off the bench, while Seibring hit seven three-pointers for 17 points.  Santa Ana drained 14 consecutive points

The Cougars' defense, ranked No. 12 nationally holding opponents to 61.6 points per game, limited Elon's top scorers to single digits in Tanner Samson (0), Eddy (9) and Dmitri Thompson (7).

Up next, CofC will trek to Delaware (6-19, 1-13 CAA) for a Thursday, Feb. 18 showdown at 7 p.m. (ET) in Newark, Del.

POSTGAME QUOTES

College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant

On the game …

“I thought it was a very good and competitive game. Elon played well. We did a good job of sticking together through the good and the bad. We had a lead and they came back. Give them credit. They made a ton of shots. I was proud of our players weathering the storm tonight and finding ways to win the game, especially when Elon made a ferocious run with a barrage of threes. We weren't as comfortable handling the 1-3-1 zone, which isn't a huge surprise. It was the first time we had faced it with that many young guys out there in front of a hostile crowd on the road. I thought we made enough plays to close out the game.”

On the play of Payton Hulsey and his aggressiveness …

“We talked to him about driving the ball. They (Elon) are a pretty good defensive team. We just told him to be aggressive. He got into the paint, but a lot of times, he tried to pass it. We kept telling him to focus on the rim. Get deep into the paint. He made two-or-three floaters and we needed all of his points tonight.”

On the team's high percentage shots …

“We wanted to drive the ball. We tried to post feed it some. We got it to Jarrell (Brantley) and Nick (Harris), who had a few around the basket. Jarrell had a lot of baskets and ended the night with 20 points. I thought our percentage was high, because we got the ball closer to the rim and we didn't settle for threes every possession. That's why we scored the ball the way we did and shot 53 percent (from the field) for the game.”
