STATESBORO, GA. - For the first time since the third match of the year, the College of Charleston women's tennis team sport a winning record at 4-3 thanks to a 4-3 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles (5-2).
Former CAA Doubles Team of the Week Katherine Schofield and Mara Argyriou were the first to strike on the afternoon, advancing the duo's record to 5-1 on the year by way of a 6-2 win over Giulia Riepe and Francisca Norregaard in the second flight.
The effort was in vain, however, as Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke dropped the third flight matchup by a score of 6-4, followed by Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely narrowly dropping 7-5 to Lindsay Truscott and Mariana Ranzahuer. With two wins, the Eagles claimed the doubles point.
Brooke McAmis led the charge in singles play as the Cougars sought to get even, rolling past Truscott 6-1, 6-0 in the third flight to tie the match at 1-1. Argyriou followed suit in similar fashion, scoring the emphatic 6-1, 6-1 victory over Norregaard in the fifth flight, giving CofC the lead.
It was the top flights that then went on to clinch the day for the College. Fieldsend scored the 6-2, 6-4 win over Riepe in the first flight, while Schofield sealed the deal over Mariana Ranzahuer in flight two, prevailing 6-4, 6-0.
The only two singles losses the Cougars incurred were close affairs that went to three sets each. McNeely nearly claimed the first set against Emilia Brujan, but the victory eluded her as her opponent won 7-6. McNeely rebounded with a 6-4 win in set two, but was spent by the time the tiebreaker rolled around, falling 10-1. Helena Nyikos started strong in the first set of flight six with a 6-1 win over Mary Phillips Smith, but dropped two close sets thereafter to surrender the point.
The Cougars will remain in Georgia for another day, with a match scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Mercer Bears up next.
