MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (11-4) picked up its ninth win in ten matches and remained perfect against CAA opponents Monday with a 7-0 win over the Towson Tigers (6-4).
The Cougars set the tone in doubles play by sweeping all three matches. Mara Argyriou and Katherine Schofield struck first with a 6-3 win over Nicole Shakhnazarova and Barbora Vasilkova in the first flight. The win extended their unbeaten streak to 13 straight matches, making them 14-1 on the year.
Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke locked up the doubles point with a 6-4 third flight win, while Liza Fieldsend and Helena Nyikos played a thrilling match with Lucy Gloninger and Lucy Williams, resulting in a 7-6(5) win to put the exclamation point on the victory.
The Cougars blitzed Towson in singles play, with Argyriou winning in the fourth flight over A.J. Gomer 6-0, 6-1 to draw first blood. Nyikos was quick on her heels with a fifth flight win over Sophie Lesage (6-1, 6-1). Brooke McAmis sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the third set against Vasilkova.
Within rapid succession, Liza Fieldsend and Sarah Jane Jones kept the points rolling with first set (6-1, 6-3) and sixth set (6-1, 6-4) wins respectively. The only match with any significant drama presented itself in the second flight, where Schofield squared off with Shakhnazarova. The native of England took a hard-fought first set 7-6(3), but Schofield battled back to take the second set 6-3. In the super tiebreak, things went back and forth until Schofield finally took the come-from-behind win with an 11-9 third set win.
“It's great to go out and get a win on my birthday,” Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “I thought we competed well, we're just going to need to come out with more intensity going forward.”
The College will be back in action Tuesday, when they will host an evening double-header against UMass and Savannah State. The Cougars will face the Minutewomen (6-6) at 2 p.m., followed by the Lady Tigers (0-11) at 6 p.m.
