CofC Baseball Defeats Charleston Southern

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – No. 23 College of Charleston took advantage of four Charleston Southern (8-9) errors and used timely hitting to knock off the Buccaneers 4-1 on Wednesday at Patriots Point.

After falling behind 1-0, Bradley Jones tied the game with an RBI ground out and Jake Maziar followed with a run-scoring single to give the Cougars (12-5) the lead for good. Jones is tied with Morgan Phillips for the team lead with 14 RBI on the season.

Danny Wondrack singled in the fourth, advanced to second on a throwing error and to third on a wild pitch. Erven Roper then grounded a ball to second to plate the run.

In the eighth, Jake Maziar walked and Dupree Hart entered as a pinch runner. Hart quickly stole second. Following a Morgan Phillips single, Tommy Richter grounded a ball to second base to score the final run of the contest.

Ryan Brown was the lone Cougar to finish the game with multiple hits. He was 2-for-3 and has seven hits in the last four games.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED

Eric Bauer (1-0) allowed one earned run – just the second all season – over six innings. The senior struck out 2 and allowed just four hits in his first start of the season. He allowed three hits in the first inning and just one in the five succeeding frames.

TURNING POINT

Anthony Burke earned his first save of the season tossing three innings in relief allowing just two hits and striking out one. Burke entered in the seventh with a three run lead and used just 47 pitches to retired nine Buccaneer batters.

NOTEWORTHY

> College of Charleston has won nine of its last 10 games.

> Jake Maziar has reached base in 15 straight games.

> Morgan Phillips finished the game 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

College of Charleston hosts Virginia Commonwealth in a three-game series over the weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
