OCEANSIDE, N.Y. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team found success in its first CAA action of the season Friday, handing the Hofstra Pride their first loss of the season by way of a 5-2 win and rising to 6-3 on the year.
Hofstra struck first in the evening matchup by way of a third-flight doubles victory, as Disha Yellayi and Giulia Leone earned the 6-1 win over Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke. The Cougars would rally back however, beginning in the second flight, where Liza Fieldsend teamed up with Brooke McAmis for the first time this season to put Michal Kaplan and Sarah Herndon away 6-2.
Red-hot tandem Katherine Schofield and Mara Argyriou earned the promotion to the first flight, and made the most of the opportunity, securing a hard-fought 6-4 win over Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano to take the doubles point for the Cougars.
The Pride drew first blood as singles began, with Kaplan prevailing over Schofield in the second flight (6-3, 6-0) to tie the match at 1-1. McAmis responded in third flight action shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Herndon to regain the lead for CofC.
Helena Nyikos moved from her normal sixth flight billing up to the fifth, and seemed to have no problem at all with the move. Nyikos won the most convincing match of the evening, plastering Yellayi by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Liza Fieldsend took the first set 6-3 over Sarah Bowen in the first flight. Bowen fought back to take the second set 6-4, but seemed to spend everything she had in doing so, as Fieldsend proceeded to win the third set 6-0 to win the day for the College. The fifth point was won by Sarah Jane Jones, who picked up her first singles win of the season with a gutsy 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Giulia Leone in the sixth flight.
CofC will have a day off Saturday to see the sites of the Big Apple, before getting back to it against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-4).
