CHARLESTON, S.C. – The regular season came to an end today for the College of Charleston women's basketball team (10-19; 5-13 vs. CAA, coming in the form of a 76-46 defeat at the hands of the James Madison Dukes (24-5; 17-1 vs. CAA).
The Cougars came out of the gate strong Saturday, opening up on a 7-2 run. Darien Huff scored five of those points without recording a miss en route to an eventual 10 point game, her first double-digit scoring output since a month ago at home against Northeastern. The Dukes would quickly recalibrate however, capturing the 16-13 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Bre Bolden led the Cougars in scoring with 13 points, adding three assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Bolden has averaged three steals per game this season, and at 86 total on the year, is just one shy of matching her own single-season record that she set last year.
Neither squad shot the ball effectively, as evidenced by neither squad cracking 40 percent from the field. The Cougars performed admirably on the glass, only getting out-rebounded by the top-rebounding team in the conference by a scant six boards. However, the Dukes were punishing in their backcourt play, dishing out 20 assists while limiting themselves to 10 turnovers.
For the Dukes, Jazmon Gwathmey led all scorers with 21 points, while Angela Mickens had nearly half the team's assists (nine) while pawing away six steals. Freshman Kayla Cooper-Williams logged a double-double with ten points and 11 boards.
With the loss, the bracket for the CAA Tournament is solidified, and the eighth seeded Cougars are set to take on the No. 9 UNCW Seahawks, whom the Cougars thrashed 68-24 earlier this week. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 9 at Noon at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
