"Nothing great is ever accomplished alone," said Butler. "This group of amazing people makes me confident about the job we have ahead of us and the quality of the experience we will provide for our student athletes."
Gibbs, a 26-year veteran of the coaching profession, most recently was an assistant coach at Wake Forest during the 2025-26 season.
"Darrick is a home run for Cougar Women's Basketball," said Butler. "He brings a wealth of high level experience, boundless energy and a good heart. He will impact every aspect of what we do. He is a proven leader and strategist. Our student athletes will benefit from all that he is. He will be a huge competitive advantage for our program and I'm excited to welcome him and his beautiful family to our Charleston Family."
Prior to Wake Forest, Gibbs spent a year as an assistant coach at Tulane, and also has eight years of experience as a head coach at North Florida (2015-2023).

Additionally, he brings 12 years of ACC coaching experience to Charleston. He spent time at Clemson - alongside Butler - and had stops at Miami and Wake Forest as well. While at Miami, he helped guide the Hurricanes to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
"This is truly a full-circle moment for me," said Gibbs. "I'm excited to be back at a place I care deeply about and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside a head coach I know and trust as we build something special for our players and this community."

Rhodes will stay in Charleston and begin her second year as an assistant coach with the Cougars this season.
"Chelsey is a high character, hard working person," said Butler. "She has a heart for our players and for the College of Charleston. She very quickly sold me on her desire to be a part of our staff and an ability to get things done. She has been an essential part of my transition into leading the program.
