CONWAY, S.C. – No. 19 Coastal Carolina came up with clutch hits when the team needed them most scoring four runs with two outs en route to a 5-3 win over College of Charleston at Springs Brooks Stadium on Wednesday.
The Chanticleers (24-10) plated two-out runs in the third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings and scored in four straight innings when including G.K. Young's one-out, solo home run in the sixth.
Michael Carpin (3-2) picked up his second quality start of the season pitching six innings and allowing just three runs on six hits.
College of Charleston (21-11-1) opened the scoring on an RBI single by Ryan Brown in the second inning. The Cougars tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Morgan Phillips doubled to start the frame before Bradley Jones roped a single down the line in left.
Tommy Richter cut the deficit to two with an RBI single in the ninth. CofC was able to get the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs, but failed to inflict any more damage.
For CCU, Zack Hopeck allowed one run on five hits through five innings of work. Mike Morrison (4-0) earned the win with 3.1 innings on the mound in relief.
