TOWSON, MD. – What started as a pitcher's duel between College of Charleston and Towson, ended in a disappointing 4-3 for the Cougars at Schuerholz Park on Friday.
Nathan Helvey (4-5) didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, but allowed three runs in the eighth inning taking the loss. CofC entered the eighth with a 3-1 lead courtesy of a two-out, two-RBI single by Dupree Hart. With two runners on base, Towson pulled within one on base hit that struck the first base bag and shot into shallow right. On the next pitch, Brady Porcelli tripled to right-center scoring two runs and putting the Tigers on top for good.
College of Charleston (22-18-1, 6-7 CAA) opened the scoring in the third. After Hart singled to start the frame, he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground ball. The first pitch to Erven Roper was low and skipped away from Towson catcher Trey Martinez. Hart raced home and, just as Martinez attempted to apply the tag, hurdled the Tiger backstop, touched home with his left hand and back-rolled past the plate.
Towson (16-27, 6-7) tied the game on three consecutive hits off Helvey in the fifth. The win is the first in 11 tries for the Tigers in the all-time series between the teams.
College of Charleston and Towson will play a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
