TOWSON, MD. – College of Charleston and Towson split a doubleheader on Saturday at Schuerholz Park. CofC took the first game, 9-4, to even the series but fell, 7-4, in the finale.
College of Charleston 9, Towson 4 (Game 1)
Bailey Ober struck out 10 batters in his second consecutive start as the Cougars took the first game of the doubleheader, 9-4.
Ober allowed just one run in eight innings of work and improved to 5-2 on the season. The sophomore right-hander has recorded a quality start in five of his last seven starts. It was also the third, 10-strikeout game in Ober's career. He fanned 10 against James Madison in his last start on April 23.
All nine CofC starters recorded a hit, while Danny Wondrack and Clay Hunt hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning. Hunt's solo shot in the frame was the first of his career.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the third when Tommy Richter hit a ground-rule double that entered the Towson bullpen allowing Wondrack to score. Richter advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Bradley Dixon.
In the sixth, Alex Pastorius singled and Connor Grant reached on an error before Wondrack deposited his second home run of the season onto the grassy knoll beyond the left field wall. Hunt followed by launching the fourth pitch of his at-bat to nearly the same spot to give The College a 6-0 advantage.
RBI singles by Bradley Jones and Pastorius in the ninth along with a sacrifice fly from Grant padded the Cougars lead. Towson eventually broke through against Ober in the bottom of the eighth. After recording the first two outs with ease, Ober walked the next two batters before allowing an RBI single.
CofC tallied 15 hits in the game, the second-most of the season. The Cougars posted 19 hits in an 11-6 win over Elon on April 3.
Towson 7, College of Charleston 4 (Game 2)
Towson scored four runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-run home run and fended off a Charleston rally to take the series finale, 7-4.
CofC got on the board first on a sacrifice fly from Bradley Dixon in the first inning. The Tigers extended its lead to 5-1 with sacrifice fly of their own in the third.
Logan McRae doubled home a run in the fourth while Bradley Jones hit his 10th home run of the season – a two-run blast – in the fifth to cut the deficit to one, 5-4. The Cougars, however, could do no more damage and surrendered two runs in the sixth.
College of Charleston (23-19-1, 7-8 CAA) continues its eight-game road stretch as it travels to take on UNCW in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
