WILMINGTON, N.C. – Morgan Phillips hit a three-run home in the fourth inning giving College of Charleston its only lead of the game as No. 15 UNCW plated four runs in the bottom half of the frame and never looked back as the Seahawks took the first game of a three-game series, 8-3, at Brooks Field on Friday.
Cougar starter Nathan Helvey (4-6) cruised through 4.2 innings before Nick Feight singled to left – the first of five consecutive two-out hits. The next batter, Casey Golden launched a home run to center. Three pitches later, Daniel Stack made it back-to-back as he homered to center to tie the game. The Seahawks weren't finished however as they collected two more singles before an error allowed the fourth run of the inning to score.
Phillips amassed two of the four CofC hits on the night. Richter singled in the first while Roper doubled and scored in the fourth. Seahawk starter Ryan Foster (10-1) became the first pitcher in the CAA to record double-digit victories.
UNCW (32-10, 12-2 CAA) has now won 17 of its last 18 games including its last five straight. CofC (23-20-1, 7-9) has dropped 10 of its last 12 contests.
